2nd annual conference: District energy faces a challenge
The Danish district energy sector faces a big challenge in the coming years, as the large heat and power plants must phase out the use of fossil fuels, and the small CHP plants lose their basic subsidy.
Heat pumps are now a feasible technology
On September 12th, the 4DH Centre and Green Energy held a workshop on large heat pumps in the district energy system. The workshop illustrated the pivotal point that large heat pumps can compete with even the cheapest fuels - even when taxes are added. Experiences from Denmark and other countries demonstrate that heat pumps represent a tested technology and a competitive alternative.
Heat Atlas to be updated
The Heat Atlas used in Heat Plan Denmark 2008 is being developed further as part of the 4DH Centre’s work. The original Heat Atlas was based on data from the Danish BBR register as well as heat plan zoning dating back to its origins in the early 1980s. However, by 2008, this data had been neglected for some time, due to the shift from thorough spatial heat planning to a case-by-case project approach, further influenced by savings and structural changes in the public sector. This has had a negative effect on all aspects of energy planning.
4DH research presented in South Korea
In the beginning of July, Associate Professor at Aalborg University David Connolly made two presentations in Korea, both of which were related to 4DH and the Heat Roadmap Europe 2 study. It was done in partnership with the research institution called KIER (Korean Institute of Energy Research).
Projects in the pipeline
With 8 out of 13 PhD positions filled; the work on Heat Roadmap Europe Pre-study I and II completed, and the Heat Atlas finished, the 4DH Centre is gaining momentum.
