First 4DH PhD finishes doctoral thesis

The first of the 12 PhD-candidates in the 4DH project, Urban Persson at Chalmers University of Technology, finished his PhD-degree in January.

His research shows a three-fold directly feasible expansion potential for district heating in Europe's urban and metropolitan areas (corresponding to 60% heat market shares). At the same time, most of Europe’s excess heat from power plants and industries is located close to the population centres that might make use of it.

Furthermore, the crucial challenges for large-scale deployment of district energy solutions are not actually located on the technical level today, but rather in organisational, economic, political and cultural dimensions. Read more in Urban Persson's doctoral thesis "District heating in future Europe: Modelling expansion potentials and mapping heat synergy regions".
